Are CPA exam fees tax deductible or can you get a tax credit for amounts paid?
Q. Hi, I was wondering if there was anywhere where i can use the fees paid to take the CPA exam on my income tax form. I am already in the accounting profession and the CPA license is required to advance in my job.

Haha, I had a co-worker wondering the same Q, yes it is deductible, but I think it's classified as a misc. deductible, either as an edu expense or business exp; So I think it's subject to the 2.5% floor of your AGI. Something about expenses on improving skills that enable to further in your profession. Also note that if you get reimbursement from your employer, you would not be able to deduct this expense.

What should I do to become a CPA if I am graduating with a BA in Economics?
Q. I go to an Ivy League school that essentially has no accounting class. To satify the 150 semester hrs requirement of the CPA exam, should I apply to Master's programs in Accounting, or should I just take enough accounting classes to make myself eligible to sit for the exam? Do you know of any schools offering good (=high quality) accounting programs/courses? If possible, I would prefer the school to be in the West or East coast. I am graduating this May and I have a very high GPA. Thank you very much! Any advice is appreciated!

A. Hi there, I was in the exact same boat as you were. I was an Econ Major, who decided to do a Master's program in Accounting at USC (University of Southern California). I think they rank in the top 5 for graduate accounting programs, and the good thing about the program is that it's a strategic recruiting school, so most people in my program were able to find jobs even before we graduated. I believe University of Illinois has the best accounting program in the US, so that's another option. It's all up to you, but I think if you are going to spend the amount of time to get 150 semester hours, then you might as well get a Master's degree out of it. You'll get paid more at most accounting firms for having a Master's degree, but won't if… [cont.]
