How do I find a CPA to Endorse my application?
Q. I have passed the CPA exam and have practical experience, but I do not work for or with a licensed CPA. Maryland requires my license application to be endorsed by a licensed CPA. Anyone been in this situation or have any advice?
Asked by Brad - Mon Jun 15 13:29:01 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I'm not sure about Maryland, but in CA and a lot of other states, you have to work under or with a licensed CPA after passing the exam for so many hours (usually around 500 or so). Then, they sign off that you've worked those hours in the required areas. It's not just a signature- it's being endorsed that you've performed the work under their supervision. So, unless Maryland has some very different licensing requirements than any state I know of, my advice to you is to get a job with a CPA firm (or a private company with a CPA in the accounting dept.) Then you'll have to do at least the minimum required hours of work under their supervision before you can get licensed. Good luck to you, and congratulations on passing the exam. :0)

What is the best way to find a good CPA (for doing tax returns) in Boston? How do I know I'm hiring a good one
Q. About how much would a CPA cost per hour? Need to catch up and do 4 years worth of taxes. Probably owe $ too and want a good CPA to help me lessen what I owe and negotiate a payment plan. Thanks for any good info!

A. You can do your taxes yourself unless you are in a complicated situation - a sole proprietorship, partnership, lot of real estate deals with depreciation, foreign taxes and regulations, own a mutual fund - along that line. If you are not comfortable, get on the National Association of Enrolled Agents - www.naea.org - web site. Click on "Find an EA". You click what you need: whether it be corporation, partnership, domestic partnerships, small business, estates and trusts, military, international, etc.You may want to select representation. Type in Boston or Boston your zip. You can type in Taxachusetts and get a whole slew of them. Enrolled agents do not work cheap, but your taxes will be done right and they will go with you if you… [cont.]

How can I work as a CPA at a firm and take over a seasonal tax firm?
Q. I currently work for a large CPA firm. I want to buy a seasonal individual tax preparing firm with staff already in place. I basically want the staff to run the office and I'd come in when I could usually 6PM or later.
Asked by Michael S - Thu Jul 24 15:31:18 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It sounds like there is the potential that you would be competing directly against your firm. That could be grounds for firing you if you are an employee, or grounds for kicking you out of the partnership if you are a partner. You should clear this with your firm before proceeding any further.

Should I start studying for my CPA exam or do my masters?
Q. I graduated with my Bachelors in Accounting in 2007. I have worked as an Accountant since then. I want to improve my skills and get a better job. Should I go to grad school, or should I buy a CPA book and start studying for my CPA exam? I have learned a lot from being an accountant, and what would be more beneficial for me? Would I be able to take my CPA exam (and understand its information) without doing my masters?
Asked by Mark d - Thu Dec 24 11:09:59 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I do believe you need a certain number of graduate credits to be eligible to write the exam. Depends on the state, but I've heard up to 30 credits. best check the state you plan to practice in. I would go CPA over Masters in accountancy - CPA allows you to practice and to sign off on audits, etc. Masters is good for a long-term career, but for now, CPA would be the better bet. and yes, you would be able to understand the information without doing a masters. you may also consider doing the CMA - less known but it's probably easier to get. always nice to get more letters behind your name

How does one obtain the work experience needed for CPA certification?
Q. i'm pursuing my associates degree in accounting. id like to eventually be CPA certified. Do you work a job specifically tailored for those who are pursuing the certification, kind of like training? im confused, because ive poked around the web a bit and it seems like you have to already be CPA certified. yes, planning on going to grad school after my 2 yrs :)

A. You have to work under the supervision of a public accountant in order to get the experience for the CPA. You will also need to get a bachelors since you won't have the full 27 hours of accounting from getting an associates degree. You can email me at myennui08@yahoo.com if you want more info, I'm trying to get mine as well.

How difficult is it to pass the CPA exam without having majored in accounting?
Q. I have a BS in Business Administration plus plan to take over 24 extra hours (junior college classes) in accounting. Ideally, I could study on my own from there to pass the CPA exam. Is this possible/realistic?
Asked by D Jones - Sat Jul 19 12:43:24 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, possible. At the end of the day the knowledge that you acquired depends on your own determination on top of what sort of information that you have received. Ie, back when there's no internet, finding information is harder that it's now. You basically depends on books/ notes & it's not easy to find them as well. Nowadays, you can search for resources (incl solved problems), bookmark them & starts reading & do the exercise yourself. That's the only way of really acquiring a knowledge. You see/ read, you'll forget. You do, then you remember.

A. Yes, you do need a Bachelor's Degree. Actually, you need 150 credit hours. A Bachelor's usually consists of 136 credit hours, so you'd need to take a few extra classes in the accounting field to make up the 150 credit requirement.

A. Haha, I had a co-worker wondering the same Q, yes it is deductible, but I think it's classified as a misc. deductible, either as an edu expense or business exp; So I think it's subject to the 2.5% floor of your AGI. Something about expenses on improving skills that enable to further in your profession. Also note that if you get reimbursement from your employer, you would not be able to deduct this expense.

Q. A. You can get good accounting jobs without the CPA designation but it does make you more marketable to have it. CPAs are getting to be harder to come by and are in demand. I'm not even looking and have been approached by headhunters seeking CPAs to fill positions.

A. It's great that you want to get an head start. But have you complete your bachlor in Accounting yet? In general, people can start studying the CPA exam by signing up for CPA review courses, like Becker. But people usually start studying for the exam after they graduate because usually, auditing courses are last to be taken for the degree. After taking auditing at school, it'll be much easier to take the CPA review courses.

A. An excellent choice is to be an internal auditor. They require most internal auditors (depending on the specific area they go into) to have a CPA so he would already be a step-ahead.

Q. My son is a cpa and wants to do something else. Any ideas short of going back to school? He doesn't want an MBA. He is working for a CPA firm, but wants to do something else. Maybe some non-traditional accounting position. Does anyone know of any?

What are your thoughts on me changing my career from being a CPA to studying to be a physician?
Q. I am in my mid 20's and sat for the CPA exam, got my license, but don't feel like it is my calling. I have flirted with the idea of going back to school part-time and taking pre-med classes while I work as a CPA. If I do well in these classes and well on the MCAT, I feel confident that I would choose to accept my admission into medical school. What do you think?

A. What the heck? Go for it. Might as well give it a try if you can afford to do so.
