how can I get CPA to give me basis of an investment?
Q. I have a limited liability (real estate based) investment that I inherited in '97. I sold it last year and need to get the basis of this investment. The CPA who has been handling the tax returns for this partnership told me that she may not have records that go back that far. The general partner told me to ask the CPA, the CPA referred me back to the general partner. How can I get my basis for this investment? Is the CPA under any legal obligation to provide me with this info once I request it? If so, does the CPA have a time restriction or can she keep me in limbo forever as long as she says she'll look into it?

A. Okay the cost basis would simply be the market value of the asset at the time you inherited it. You can actually guestimate. It is not that big of a deal. **I would say get them on a conference call and tell them you want it resolved.**

What is the starting salary in Sacramento for a CPA candidate?
Q. I am working for a CPA, have done 3 audits, numerous compilations and reviews, and went through one hectic tax season. I am trying to study for the CPA and hopefully take it in February. What pay range should I expect before and after I pass the exam? I know it can vary. I am just looking for a ball park figure of what to expect. Is that $40k for a non CPA or CPA?
Asked by Dom - Wed Dec 3 18:50:37 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Expect to be paid a starting salary of $40,000-50,000 but a CPA that doesnt make many mistakes can be raised within 10 years to a $100,000+ paying job.

What is the difference with a cpa and a federally licensed tax advisor?
Q. I went to federally licensed agent to do my taxes he informed me that he was not a CPA and he said he was a specialist. What is the difference, is one better than the other?

A. I think what you are talking about is an enrolled agent. An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a federally-authorized tax practitioner who has technical expertise in the field of taxation and who is empowered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before all administrative levels of the Internal Revenue Service for audits, collections, and appeals. Only Enrolled Agents are required to demonstrate to the IRS their competence in matters of taxation before they may represent a taxpayer before the IRS. Unlike attorneys and CPAs, who may or may not choose to specialize in taxes, all Enrolled Agents specialize in taxation. Enrolled Agents are the only taxpayer representatives who receive their right to practice from the U.S.… [cont.]

What is the best way to find a good CPA (for doing tax returns) in Boston? How do I know I'm hiring a good one
Q. About how much would a CPA cost per hour? Need to catch up and do 4 years worth of taxes. Probably owe $ too and want a good CPA to help me lessen what I owe and negotiate a payment plan. Thanks for any good info!

A. You can do your taxes yourself unless you are in a complicated situation - a sole proprietorship, partnership, lot of real estate deals with depreciation, foreign taxes and regulations, own a mutual fund - along that line. If you are not comfortable, get on the National Association of Enrolled Agents - www.naea.org - web site. Click on "Find an EA". You click what you need: whether it be corporation, partnership, domestic partnerships, small business, estates and trusts, military, international, etc.You may want to select representation. Type in Boston or Boston your zip. You can type in Taxachusetts and get a whole slew of them. Enrolled agents do not work cheap, but your taxes will be done right and they will go with you if you… [cont.]

Should I start studying for my CPA exam or do my masters?
Q. I graduated with my Bachelors in Accounting in 2007. I have worked as an Accountant since then. I want to improve my skills and get a better job. Should I go to grad school, or should I buy a CPA book and start studying for my CPA exam? I have learned a lot from being an accountant, and what would be more beneficial for me? Would I be able to take my CPA exam (and understand its information) without doing my masters?
Asked by Mark d - Thu Dec 24 11:09:59 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I do believe you need a certain number of graduate credits to be eligible to write the exam. Depends on the state, but I've heard up to 30 credits. best check the state you plan to practice in. I would go CPA over Masters in accountancy - CPA allows you to practice and to sign off on audits, etc. Masters is good for a long-term career, but for now, CPA would be the better bet. and yes, you would be able to understand the information without doing a masters. you may also consider doing the CMA - less known but it's probably easier to get. always nice to get more letters behind your name

How does one obtain the work experience needed for CPA certification?
Q. i'm pursuing my associates degree in accounting. id like to eventually be CPA certified. Do you work a job specifically tailored for those who are pursuing the certification, kind of like training? im confused, because ive poked around the web a bit and it seems like you have to already be CPA certified. yes, planning on going to grad school after my 2 yrs :)
Asked by Nikki - Sun Jan 11 13:04:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You have to work under the supervision of a public accountant in order to get the experience for the CPA. You will also need to get a bachelors since you won't have the full 27 hours of accounting from getting an associates degree. You can email me at myennui08@yahoo.com if you want more info, I'm trying to get mine as well.

A. Every state is different on their requirements to become licensed, but as another answerer said, I do not believe any state specifically requires an accounting degree. Most require a "bachelors degree with XX number of hours in Accounting courses" or something along those lines. Florida is like that, my bachelors degree was in Finance - I just took the extra Accounting courses needed for the CPA exam. you can check state requirements here: Ideally, the best place to check is with your state's board of accountancy, but since it's so hard to get answers from BOA, maybe you can go here and ask someone who's already done the leg work for you: that is a forum full of folks currently taking the exam. There's even a separate section for… [cont.]

A. There are lots of recruitment agencies that might be able to help you - per the first answerer. Here is another one I have no connection or receive any commission from them. I think they "specialise" in looking after small businesses. (I think) I think recruitment is a tricky process. Have you been trying to advertise? Maybe the job is not described properly in the ad? That could be a turn off. Maybe the job ad is too vague. Different accountants have different skills and specialisations - if it's too vague I personally would just move on to the next ad, rather than trying to figure out what that vague ad is trying to say. If you don't know whether the job is too vague or not - yeah - maybe a recruitment agent can help. Maybe. It's… [cont.]

A. Becker is widely considered the best. Put another way, all of the Big 4 (PwC, D&T, E&Y, and KPMG), BDO, BKD, and Grant Thornton all send their people through the Becker program. From my personal experience, it works. Just stick to the program by watching the lectures and doing both the multiple choice questions and the simulations. If you do this, you should be fine. The exam is difficult, but not impossible if you have a plan and stick to it. I used the Becker program last year and passed all four section on my first try from July to November '07. The down side of Becker is the price (if you have to pay for it yourself). It is more expensive than the others. I was lucky enough to be in a position that my employer paid for the cost of… [cont.]

Asked by Ted Bundy - Wed Mar 26 02:38:29 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They're almost the same thing. NZ has a Chatered Accountant and the US has a Certified Public Accountant. I'm not sure of the requirements to be a CA in NZ, but for CPA's you have a minimum education requirement, set by each state, a work requirement, and you have to pass the Uniform CPA Exam. If you've got your sight set on being an accountant, it's not to hard to become a CPA. For instance, the state I ilve in, you must have 150 semester hours of college credit and work at leat a year in a professional accounting setting, as well as pass the CPA Exam. Getting the education takes more effort as you can get a BS degree at most schools with only 120 hours or so. That's at least another year of school and then you have to work and pass the… [cont.]

Haha, I had a co-worker wondering the same Q, yes it is deductible, but I think it's classified as a misc. deductible, either as an edu expense or business exp; So I think it's subject to the 2.5% floor of your AGI. Something about expenses on improving skills that enable to further in your profession. Also note that if you get reimbursement from your employer, you would not be able to deduct this expense.

A. Here are a couple sources of data: - at my company we tend to hire in experienced CPAs at ~110-125k (2-4 years) - I also work in Silicon Valley, so I know that plays a role in it. - here's another site that should help - this site allows you to figure out salary of CPAs - initial chart is based more on location - ie. Ney York CPAs median salary is $75k, while $55-60k is more representative of other areas. But you can narrow your search more by adding in additional parameters: Also realize that after awhile, years of experience are not going to be as important as skill. If you're good, you'll be making a lot of money in no time. Good luck!

Is it a requirement to take the CPA exam to become an actual accountant?
Q. How important is it? The differences in pay? How hard is the CPA? Amount of studying? Any details opinions or experiences are very much appreciated!
Asked by Josephine - Fri Aug 14 17:52:40 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can still do public accounting without a CPA but only under the supervision of an actual CPA. The difference in pay at entry level wont be that big but after ten years or so it will be significantly different since your responsibilities are capped without a CPA, meaning too that your pay is essentially capped. You might also want to open your own accounting shop once you gain experience too, but you can't do that without having your CPA. CPA itself is hard, but not impossible for anyone who did well in their accounting coursework. The best way to study is to just make sure you do well in all your courses to begin with... people who struggle with the CPA usually are the ones who got C's and even D's in their accounting coursework… [cont.]
