Illinois ( / ˌ ɪ l ɪ ˈ n ɔɪ / il-i-noy), is the fifth-most populous state of the United States of America, and is often noted for being a microcosm of the entire country. It is the most populous state in the Midwest region, however with 65% of its residents living in the Chicago metropolitan area, most of the state has either a rural or a small town character. With Chicago in the northeast, small industrial cities and great agricultural productivity in central and western Illinois, and natural resources like coal, timber, and petroleum in the south, Illinois has a broad economic base. Illinois is an important transportation hub; the Port of Chicago connects the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River via the Illinois River. As the "most average state", Illinois has long had a reputation as a bellwether both in social and cultural terms and politics, though the latter has not really been true since the early 1970s.

In the 1810s settlers began arriving from Kentucky; Illinois achieved statehood in 1818.Chicago was founded in the 1830s on the banks of the Chicago River, one of the few natural harbors on southern Lake Michigan. Railroads and John Deere's invention of the self-scouring steel plow turned Illinois' rich prairie into some of the world's most productive and valuable farmlands, attracting immigrant farmers from Germany and Sweden. By 1900, the growth of industrial jobs in the northern cities and coal mining in the central and southern areas attracted immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe. Its manufacturing made the state a major arsenal in both world wars. The Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to Chicago, established a large community that created the city's famous jazz and blues cultures.

Three U.S. Presidents have been elected while living in Illinois — Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Barack Obama. However, only President Ronald Reagan grew up in the state; he was born in Tampico, and raised in Dixon. Lincoln is the only president buried in Illinois; he is interred at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield. Today, Illinois honors Lincoln with official state slogan, Land of Lincoln, which is displayed on its license plates.

I work in Illinois and live in Illinois but my company is in CA. What do I need to do for taxes?
Q. I am a consultant working for a company that exists in California. The client is in Illinois and I also live in Illinois. My W-2 from my company shows California as the state taking taxes. How do I prepare my tax return? Do i need to report taxes to California?

A. Is it a temporary assignment for a set period of one year or less? In other words do you have a residence in CA and are your living expenses in IL deductible. See If you live and work in IL for an indefinite period of time (or over a year), you should tell your employer to withhold IL tax. IL Dept of Revenue If it is too late for your employer to correct your W-2 you would need to file non-resident in CA to get your CA withholding back (hope you don't get an IOU) Which forms you file for each state depend whether you lived in IL the entire year or moved here during the year.

Illinois unemployment benefits and how they relate to a new small business owner?
Q. I am currently unemployed and collecting Illinois unemployment benefits. If I take a new job as a non-employee contractor for a new company then I am technically self employed, correct? If so, would I be eligible to continue collecting unemployment benefits while I am in the start up period of that career and not making any income?

A. No, you can not, to do so would be to commit fraud. You will be employed, self employed is still employed. You are no longer seeking employment.

How badly will the impeachment of the governor of Illinois affect the new Obama US government's effectiveness?
Q. The governor today says that a conspiracy of the Democratic and Republican parties in Illinois are behind his impeachment. Will he take down Obama with him, or will he move from being simply an Illinois joke to a national farce?

A. President Obama has already distanced himself from his detractors by miles. All of the 'swift boaters' are out of gas, out of ammo and out of luck. The right wing radio nitwits keep going on about 'socialism' and 'surrender' and 'closing Gitmo' and all of that silliness that actually lost them the respect of the entire world...not to mention an election. The ditto-heads still eat this BS up, but everyday that goes by the GOP's Ministry of Propaganda sounds evermore goofy even to many republicans. Closing Guantanamo...nobody has suggested that these guys should be 'let go'...just that the prison there should be closed. Also the US is holding close to 25,000 people in prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan and there's no talk about them being… [cont.]
