Illinois (pronounced /ˌɪlɨˈnɔɪ/ ( listen) IL-i-NOY), the 21st state admitted to the United States of America, is the most populous and demographically diverse Midwestern state and the fifth most populous state in the nation. With Chicago in the northeast, small industrial cities and great agricultural productivity in central and western Illinois, and natural resources like coal, timber, and petroleum in the south, Illinois has a broad economic base. Illinois is an important transportation hub; the Port of Chicago connects the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River via the Illinois River. Illinois is often viewed as a microcosm of the United States; an Associated Press analysis of 21 demographic factors found Illinois the "most average state", while Peoria has long been a proverbial social and cultural bellwether.

Approximately 66% of the population of Illinois resides in the northeastern corner of the state, primarily within the city of Chicago and the surrounding area.

With a population near 40,000 between 1300 and 1400 AD, the Mississippian city of Cahokia, in what is now southern Illinois, was the largest city within the future United States, until it was surpassed by New York City between 1790 and 1800. About 2,000 Native American hunters and a small number of French villagers inhabited the Illinois area at the time of the American Revolution. American settlers began arriving from Kentucky in the 1810s; they achieved statehood in 1818. The future metropolis of Chicago was founded in the 1830s on the banks of the Chicago River, one of the only natural harbors on southern Lake Michigan. Railroads and John Deere's invention of the self-scouring steel plow made central Illinois' rich prairie into some of the world's most productive and valuable farmlands, attracting immigrant farmers from Germany and Sweden. By 1900, the growth of industry in the northern cities and coal mining in the central and southern areas attracted immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe, and made the state a major arsenal in both World wars. African Americans migrating to Chicago from the rural South formed a large and important community, which created the city's famous jazz and blues cultures. Three U.S. Presidents have been elected from Illinois — Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and Barack Obama. Ronald Reagan was born in Tampico and grew up within Illinois. Lincoln is interred at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.

How does Illinois fill the Senate vacancy created by Barack Obama becoming President?
Q. I know that each state has its own rules and that few, if any, hold by-elections in any way similar to the filling of House of Commons vacancies. What does Illinois do?

Is it possible to teach in Illinois without being certified if I have a Bachelors degree?
Q. I've heard that some states that have teacher shortages allow you to teach as long as you have a bachelors degree in anything. Does Illinois have any programs like this? Also, what other states do?

A. I don't believe you can teach in IL without a certificate. It used to be that you had to have a teaching degree to even sub in the state but they couldn't find enough subs so that law went to the wayside. You can however teach private school without a certificate. I would check out www.isbe.net for more information.

Are there any foods and or recipes from Illinois?
Q. Illinois is ranked 49th of the 50 states for fishing. But they grow a lot of soy beans. Any good food from there?

A. As a resident of Southern IL we have quite a few decent crops... in my region we have several orchards (peach and apple) and other berry farms (strawberry and blueberry). It always seems that corn is a staple crop as well. There are many fruit cobbler/dessert recipes that occur often in my area. This area is also filling quickly with several vineyards/wineries that do extremely well in this type of landscape (in the southern portion of IL we have beautiful rolling hills and natural bluffs). Speaking of the fishing... many local people do have fish fries often during the year. As a person who's family has lived in this area for over 6 generations I'm trying to recall family favorites that we always have. A favorite of ours has always… [cont.]
