How come it is all my Responsibility?
Q. I suffer with Borderline Personality Disorder, after 8 years of therapy I have finally learned some of the signs when I am going down hill and feeling suicidal. I find the problem with this is when I try and get help, I am told it is my responsibility. I find this makes me feel worse. A lot of the time this response will make me actually worse rather than better. I wonder what is the point of Care Programme Approach and risk assessment if they can just throw it back at you all the time. Am I the only one who has this problem. At the last meeting they had I didn't attend so they put me on enhanced CPA it hasn't made any difference to the way they treat me. I live in the UK

A. Hi, i have the exact same problem/feelings. I feel that when you are having mental difficulties, everyone says..go see your doctor, counsellor etc they will help you...but it's as though no one really can sometimes because they just tell you.."only you can help yourself...i am just here to make you realise how"..it sometimes makes you feel like you will never get away from it because no one can help you really...and that's what makes me feel more down...it's as though you just have to go and suffer and work your own way out of the hole and that can hurt a lot when your told it and it makes you think "what is the point in anything". I am seeing a counsellor at the moment..she is lovely...but It scares me when i feel so alone and when i am… [cont.]

Bartering children's health for a sex ed program that doesn't work?
Q. As an effort to get Republicans on board to support the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), the House has offered to increase funding for abstinence-only sex ed, an approach shown to be ineffective, by $28m. That amount would provide health care for 150,000 more children. Does this sound like a good idea? How can anyone justify this? When that money could go to so many better uses, how can our nation's leaders make such a proposal? I can almost accept that as the only way to get this bill to pass and get ANY more children into health care programs, but it seems so irresponsible to do it just to play politics. Given that abstinence-only sex ed is a largely religious idea, what do you think about this trade off? Can… [cont.]

A. Unfortunately, it's probably the only way to get the Republicans to start to even think about caring for the children. It's just not on their agenda. It's very sad, I know. I would hesitate to support it, but if that's the only way to get medical care for children, I probably would.

Any parents switch from standard medicine to a naturopathic approach for your child?
Q. Our son was recently evaluated by our state funded program and they thought he might have Autism but upon second and third opinions from developmental pediatricians he has been found to have a language delay. For various reasons I have chosen to abandon standard medicine including vaccines and go with a Naturopathic doctor who immediately took our 22 month son off of milk/cheese/yogurt and gave him medication to cleanse the lead from his system since he was found at 15 months to have an elevated lead reading. By the way he previously hardly said three word phrases and now he is coming out with three and four word phrases regularly. So I'm wondering if there are any other parents out there like me and if so would you care to share your… [cont.]

A. My 11 year-old son has autism and has limited verbal abilities. I have used a mixed approach to his medical treatment, as that fits best with my philosophies. We did not learn he was autistic until he was three, long after he was vaccinated. We put him on a gluten-free caesin-free diet with no improvement. As it turns out, we learned through standard allergy testing that he is allergic to wheat, soy, and other foods, but not dairy. What was I substituting for dairy? Soy. The reason that I combine philosophies is that often with alternative medicine, I have found that there is a "band wagon" that people jump on. There is so much guilt propagated by both the parents who choose alternative treatments and the western MD's who basically… [cont.]
