How good a state is Maryland for safety and raising a family?
Q. I was just having a bit of a hard time finding some good links for information about this; I know there are some ghetto like areas around Washington DC, but what about the rest of Maryland? (I'm asking because me and my lady may wish to move there, as I've been accepted into the University of Maryland) Does anyone know any good info (or links or websites) as to how good a state Maryland is as far as safety and good place to raise a family goes?

A. Well, I have lived here my entire life. I am from near DC originally, and my wife is from the far off Eastern Shore. But I take since you are going to University of Maryland, you would want to be reasonably close to it? Generally Prince George's County is one of the worst . It has a lot of crime and poverty, the UMD campus is not so bad though, but that isn't really a place to live if you are married with kids. Montgomery County is a strange mix where some southern areas like Wheaton are nearly as bad as PG county, where as Bethesda is one of the most affluent and educated in the US. Northern parts of MontCo become progressively more suburban and quiet, eventually becoming rural. Areas to look for with safety in mind are away from… [cont.]

What are some colleges in Maryland with a good music program?
Q. I'm planning on majoring in music, so what are some good colleges in Maryland for that? I'm going to apply for Peabody, but I have to have some other back up plan as well. How's the University of Maryland?

A. Hey! I just went to grad school at the Peabody Conservatory! It's lovely in Baltimore...anyway, I would have to agree w/ the guy above me. I went to the University of Maryland (College Park) for a Masterclass, and their performing arts center is really nice. The campus is also great, it has an energetic feel. You should definitely check them out - you may like it better if you want a "large university" feel (although I suppose if you go to Peabody you can go up to the Homewood campus of Hopkins to do "campusy" stuff - although Univ. of Maryland has a good football team AND marching band). Good luck! I would say def. Peabody and University of Maryland - College Park for sure!

Does Maryland offer deferred adjudication for traffic violations, similar to what Texas has?
Q. There is a thing in Texas were you pay the full fine and if you don't get any additional traffic violations for 6 months the violation is removed. Does Maryland have anything like this? What are the options in Maryland if you get a traffic violation, ie, unsafe lane change?
Asked by Jamie - Tue Oct 9 16:29:05 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You may have the ticket no adjudicated, meaning that it is not held against you, but it still goes on your record. The fine will be greatly reduced and no points assessed. If you get a ticket again anytime in the future and fight it, the judge will see you already had a prior non-adjudication and they will think twice about doing it again.

How many hours drive is Maryland to Toronto?
Q. We are visiting our uncle in Maryland and we are planning to make a short trip to Canada. How tight is the security to cross the border from Buffalo to Canada? My aunt said that it would be better to bring a rental car rather than a borrowed car because of documentation purposes and security. What's the road condition like? I hear some people say it takes day and a half, others say its 9 hrs and others say its 12.

A. You are looking at a 500-600 mile drive, depending on where in MD you are starting from. With the traffic situation in the Northeast, this will be about 12 hours driving (not counting stopping for fuel, food, rest rooms). If you are taking a rental into Canada, make sure that you have permission to do so, in writing, on the rental contract! You will also need to have a passport for each member of your traveling party. Have a safe trip!

What is the best family friendly neighborhood in Maryland to own a home?
Q. My husband and I live in New York with our 3 year old son. Living costs are expensive in NY and was considering looking for affordable homes in Maryland next Summer 2008. Trusting real estate agents are tough because they are not fully honest. By other people's experience, please let us know of any city/neighborhood in Maryland that is family friendly (schools, parks, shopping centers, best home locations near families w/ children). We didn't want to visit a location with high crime rates as we are experiencing that now in New York City. Thanks for any help you can give us! : )

Any good places to go in the Maryland area for my bachelorette party?
Q. I am planning on staying local and having my bachelorette party in the Maryland/DC area. Any hot clubs or placing we should go to? Destinations? The ocean?

A. The hottest place around is my place. Bring your friends over and we'll dance. Ok, you're not biting? In that case, I would recommend Georgetown area. Lots of clubs there. The problem is, they go in and out of business every year, so they change their names constantly. Just go to Georgetown with a pocket full of cash and enjoy yourselves. One last thing. designated driver! I don't know you, but I want you and your bridesmaids and best friends to enjoy your wedding. Not participate in a funeral.

A. Here's a link to Catholic Community Services in the Maryland area. I can't see exactly what is offered in your area or where to go for help because you will have to put what city you live in and you didn't say. If you look on the left hand side you'll see an All Programs link you can click on and when you do you'll see they help with daycare and a lot more things. I'm not Catholic, but I know that Catholic Community Services will help you even if you are not a Catholic as they helped me when my kids were babies and toddlers (and YES -- I was married and we were both working -- to the person who told her to get a job) Anyway, here's the link:

What colleges in Maryland accept credits from Tesst College of Technology?
Q. I have recently enrolled to Tesst and I was wondering if when I get my associates degree in network information systems do any other universities in Maryland accept my credits? Also if they dont when I apply to the school will I be accepted as a freshman again or as a junior since I already did 2 years at Tesst? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

A. TESST is a trade school with inferior ACCSCT "national accreditation". Regionally accredited (ie fully legitimate) schools will usually not accept credits from school that are not regionally accredited. I suggest you leave this TESST "school" as quickly as possible and enroll in a community college. It was a very bad decison to attend TESST.

A. Ownership in your private, off-duty life is treated just like you were a civilian. Your military weapons are issued to you while on duty, they are kept on the base. You cannot take them home and your enlisted status does not entitle you to any special private ownership rights. Now that being said, the M9 (I assume you mean the Italian 9mm semi-auto pistol?) is a perfectly legal firearm for a civilian. You can buy handguns in Maryland no problem, just as long as you pass the background check and waiting period. Any licensed gun shop has the paperwork there and can give you the whole explanation. What is the income potential of a forensic scientist in Maryland or nearby states?
Q. Just on average how much can a forensic scientist make in this state and what is the need for them here in Maryland?

A. The pay range for entry level forensic scientist at the Maryland State Police, Forensic Sciences Division ranges from approximately $50,000 up to approximately $80,000. This pay grade requires at least a Bachelor's degree, and preference is for the applicant to have a Master's degree. It is not expected that anyone would be hired into this position at the top of the pay scale, but with yearly increases in pay, eventually the position would reach the maximum pay. There is certainly a great need for them, but the better question is "what is the availability of open positions?" There currently are a lot of applicants for forensic positions, and some people are willing to take Technician positions at an even lower pay scale just to "get in… [cont.]
